Paperboard Packaging Types
Generally speaking, there is no rigid differentiation between paper and paperboard. However, paperboard is generally thicker (usually 12pt or 0.012" in thickness or more). It's also easily cut and formed, lightweight, and, because it is strong, is used in packaging.

Great packages begin with the right material that will deliver performance, quality and dependability for the product it holds. Paperboard packaging is available in several different grades, each with unique features suitable for different packaging needs. The most popular grades of paperboard packaging are:

Aseptic Packaging
A package in which sterile contents are filled and sealed into a multi-laminate package under a controlled, sterile environment. Aseptic packaging and processing can be accomplished—in modern times—in a variety of ways. The processing and packaging equipment itself is often heated to a temperature of 300:320ºF for a preset amount of time. The food itself then must immediately be run through the equipment while it is sterile. The packaging itself can be sterilized by steam, heat, radiation, or hydrogen peroxide.

Blister Pack
A thin bubble or dome of semi-rigid plastic attached to a piece of paperboard to form a package. Blister pack is a term for several types of pre-formed plastic packaging used for small consumer goods, foods, and for pharmaceuticals.

The primary component of a blister pack is a cavity or pocket made from a formable web, usually a thermoformed plastic. This usually has a backing of paperboard or a lidding seal of aluminum foil or plastic. A blister that folds onto itself is often called a clamshell.

Blister packs are useful for protecting products against external factors, such as humidity and contamination for extended periods of time. Opaque blisters also protect light-sensitive products against UV rays.

Carded Packaging
Type of packaging that consists of a stiff paperboard card onto which a product is held by a pre-formed plastic blister. Blister cards are usually covered with a special coating that allows the blister to be heat-sealed to the card.
Folding Carton
Containers made by bending grades of plain or printed boxboard, cut and creased in a variety of sizes and shapes. Folding cartons are delivered to the user in a flat, or glued and collapsed form.

Rigid Box
A stiff paperboard box in three dimensional construction, typically fabricated from non-bending chipboard that is overwrapped with printed paper or other covering materials and delivered “set up” and ready to use.
